Botanicals: Kōwhai Seeds & Little Baskets : March 2017

31/3/2017

March started & I had absolutely no idea of what I might do for the month's #52weeksofbotanials so I went off for a walk around the property to see what was happening in our world of botanicals.
It's autumn & so a lot of the plants & trees are in various stages of the seed ripening process.

The pods of the kōwhai are fascinating little sculptural forms & the seeds within are not only a beautiful colour but they are some of the most resilient seeds we have.
I thought they'd make great little beads so, using a tiny hand piece & bit, I drilled a tiny hole through them.

Deep in my yarn stash I found a spool of hemp which I crocheted into a little round basket & left spaces around the top edge for the little seed beads to be threaded into.
I attached the seed beads with cotton thread after the basket was finished.

I thought the scale of small basket was perfect for the little seeds & that set the scene for the next little basket, This time a small coiled basket made of muka.
I placed the seed beads in situ as I stitched & even devised an almost invisible stitch to
hold them in place.
I've included a photo of the book I used as reference. It is an excellent resource.

The last of the month is a twined basket using an unidentified rush which grows in a clump beside our water pump as the spokes & muka as the sides.
It remains unfinished because I ran out of time, well actually I ran out of days in the month !
I'm not sure how I will incorporate the little beads into this basket.
My plan is to dedicate a day to this wee one so that I can start & finish it in one sitting while the reeds are green & plump.
I'll be sure to update this post with photos once it's complete.
